IUI involves collecting the partner's or a donor's sperm and placing it inside a woman's uterus to increase the chances of fertilization. A man's sperm is collected and processed through the sperm-washing' process. Sperm washing separates swimming sperm from non-swimming sperm and removes all undesirable matter. Around the time of ovulation, this swimming sperm is now placed in a woman's uterus and closer to the fallopian tubes using a catheter. The IUI procedure begins with the collection of blood samples and an ultrasound test to assess your condition. If everything appears to be in order, your IUI will be scheduled just before you begin ovulating. Before inseminating the uterus with sperm, you will be given hCG shots, usually 24 hours before the procedure, to increase your chances of success. The sperm-washing process will prepare and select the sperm on the day of the procedure. A catheter containing your sperm will then be inserted through the cervix into your uterus. After the procedure, you will usually be asked to lie horizontally for a few minutes. And then it's finished. Be patient for two weeks while the sperm does its work. After two weeks, you will be asked to take a pregnancy test at home or to visit the hospital to see if the procedure was successful.
