Diseases of the digestive tract are surgically treated with gastrointestinal surgery. A benign or malignant tumour, as well as any damaged organs like the intestine, are removed during surgery. It also fixes other health issues, like hernias. The following digestive conditions may be treated surgically to cure them: Appendicitis: The surgeon performs an appendectomy to remove the appendix when it becomes inflamed and pus-filled. Diverticular Disease: A long-term illness in which a tiny pouch or pocket forms in the colon and produces constant pain. Diverticulosis is another name for this condition. At first, the medical staff would rather treat it without surgery. To remove the swollen portion of the intestine, however, the surgeons must perform bowel resection surgery if the condition worsens or becomes inflamed. Hiatal hernias and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Hiatal hernia symptoms include GERD. The condition known as GERD is characterised by the reflux of stomach acid into the oesophagus (food pipe). In these situations, the hernia must be repaired with a fundoplication, and the acid must be kept out by wrapping the top of the stomach around the base of the oesophagus.
